“I wouldn’t be happy in a band that just want a girlie standing there, singing and looking cute,” proclaimed the scarlet-haired Garbage vocalist Shirley Manson. She was spotted by producers and musicians Steve Marker, Butch Vig and Duke Erikson, who were looking for a lead female singer for their new band Garbage, on MTV’s 120 Minutes show where she was performing with her then band Angelfish.
Vig said at the time: "We saw their video "Suffocate Me", which had a very dark Patti Smith kind of edge to it we thought was great. We thought she had a great voice and a very interesting persona."
In 1994 Manson was invited to record with them for one album only, entitled simply Garbage (released August 1995). The multiple Grammy nominated album brought worldwide acclaim to the band and Manson’s lead vocal remained to be the driving force of the band’s sound for the next three studio albums, and helping to generate over 17 million record sales over a 10 year period. Their most memorable tracks include Only Happy When It Rains, Stupid Girl and Queer.
'At the time of photographing the band I had not really heard much of their music, but I loved Shirley’s mix of the scary doll look and with it the most beautiful red hair and super sexy Scottish accent. I didn’t realise how massive this band was going to be until I heard the album, then it was obvious.'
