Ian Davies remembers David Bowie

'I was 12 years old and the song playing on the radio was Life On Mars; my older brother was a massive fan and from that moment so was I. It was October 1996 when I eventually got to meet and work with Bowie, just before he turned 50 and he was unbelievable, almost like chatting to your best friend within five seconds of meeting him. We spent half a day in the studio in New York; at one point he picked me up and swung me around the studio. I had to tell him that we had to get on - this felt a bit strange telling your musical hero to behave, but his sense of humour and kindness in helping to put at ease a somewhat nervous photographer was what I will always remember. He was a giant in the music world who inspired and influenced a whole generation but that down to earth attitude and sense of fun that he showed during that day, will stay with me forever.'

Originally published in the RayGun book Out Of Control, which included interviews made by Bowie, the photographs were taken on 10 x 8 large format camera and shot on film. These photographs and more examples from the photo shoot can be viewed via the The Fine Art Edition Prints in the Collective section.
